Ministry Of Culture, Youth & Sports To Host Cultural Workshop
By Tony Alabastro

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, in cooperation with the Philippine Embassy, will be hosting a cultural workshop tomorrow, to be conducted by the world renowned Bayanihan Dance Company of the Philippines.

Inquiries regarding attendance to the cultural workshop have been referred to the host ministry, the Philippine Embassy said, in response to telephone calls it has received.

Fifteen members of the multi-awarded dance troupe, including choreographer Melito Vale Cruz, arrived yesterday in Brunei after a successful tour of Ho Chi Minh City last week.

Vale Cruz said he was a member of the Bayanihan troupe, which performed in Bandar Seri Begawan in 1987 for the Asean Dance Festival hosted by Brunei, where he first met Awang

Sumadi Sukaimi, now director of the Language and Literature Bureau.

"We will be conducting a cultural workshop on Wednesday for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. We will teach the Philippine dance, Subli from the Batangas province, give a background on the dance's why, where and how, and give costumes during an exchange of gifts with the ministry. We will give camisa chino (the undergarment shirt), the barong tagalog (formal Philippine wear), the pantaloon (pair of pants) and the sambalilo (native hat)," Vale Cruz said.

Bruneian residents Anyati and her husband, Haji Besar hosted a high tea for the Bayanihan dancers and served the local version of Philippine delicacies.

The Bayanihan dancers opened last night the sold-out Filipino Food Festival buffet dinner at the Holiday Lodge Hotel in Jerudong.

They will perform Muslim, Spanish and rural Philippine dances in tonight's diplomatic dinner hosted by Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Darussalam Mrs Virginia H. Benavidez and her spouse, Pio, to celebrate the 107th Philippine Independence Day, for diplomats and invited guests.

A free public performance will be staged at the International Convention Centre tomorrow night by the Bayanihan dancers. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
