Brunei Joins ASEAN Ministerial
Meeting In Jakarta Today
Bandar Seri
Begawan – The 37th Asean Ministerial meeting (AMM) and the 11th
Asean Regional Forum and Post-Ministerial Conferences will be held in
Jakarta, Indonesia for four days starting today.
Much will be discussed during the
meetings especially progress in many areas of cooperation within the
regional association.
The AMM and subsequent meetings will
be held at the Jakarta Convention Centre, JCC.
More than 500 delegates are expected
to attend the meetings, including delegates from Brunei.
The Asean Foreign Ministers will also
meet in a 'retreat' format.
This is the first formal meeting of
the Asean Foreign Ministers since the Bali Summit in October 2003. It
is particularly crucial in light of the task entrusted by the 9th
Asean Summit to finalise plans of action for the attainment of an
Asean Community in 2020.
The Asean Community concept is a
manifestation of the wish of Asean countries to closer and mutually
beneficial integration among them and among their people, and to
promote regional peace and stability, security, development and
prosperity.
More specifically, the AMM is
mandated to approve the plans of action for the Asean Security
Community (ASC) and the Asean Socio-Cultural Community which will
subsequently be endorsed by the next Asean Summit in November 2004 in
Vientiane, Laos.
Meanwhile, 23 Asia-Pacific countries
are participants to the Asean Regional Forum.
