Early Solution Expected In Brunei-Malaysia Offshore Oil Dispute
By CT Hj Mahmod

Bandar Seri Begawan - Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, yesterday hinted at an early resolution to the ongoing oilfield dispute between Brunei and Malaysia.

Referring to a prolonged territorial dispute with Brunei that has halted oil exploration work in two huge deepwater blocks since early last year, the Malaysian deputy prime minister was quoted by AFP as saying, “negotiations are still ongoing”.

Speaking to reporters in the Malaysian capital after opening a two-day Asia Oil and Gas Conference, Najib said, “We hope that there is a resolution soon. The sooner the better but such matters are ‘delicate’ that require very intensive discussion between the two related parties.”

The contested area, involving Block J, represents about half of Brunei’s entire offshore territory and it is vital to its plans to diversify its oil-dependent economy, reported AFP.

Najib urged oil-producing countries in Asia to discuss how to obtain secure and reliable energy at reasonable cost.

The deputy prime minister also told reporters that Malaysia has no plans to join some Asian countries, which are urging for a large oil stockpile to boost energy security. Najib said, “We do not have a massive supply. It costs a lot of money and we do not think we have immediate plans to do that.”

The issue of stockpiling was raised at the 21st Asean Ministers’ Energy Meeting (AMEM) in Manila recently.

Meanwhile, the New Straits Times reported last week that Malaysia has struck oil and gas again in its waters making it the third and latest discovery by the US firm Murphy Oil Corp, this time at the Kakap well, off Sabah.

In a front-page story, “Murphy strikes oil, gas off Sabah again”, the paper reported that the company has confirmed there is significant exploration potential across the company’s deepwater acreage at Kakap well. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
