Filipinos Mark 106th Philippine Independence

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two hundred Filipinos yesterday morning marked the 106th anniversary of their independence day with the hoisting of the Filipino flag at "Ang Bahay" in Rimba.

Philippine Ambassador to Brunei Virginia H. Benavidez and Philippine Defence and Armed Forces Attache Moh. Nur Askalani led the flag hoisting activity.

Overseas Filipino workers and Filipinos studying here witnessed the ceremony. They sang the Philippine National Anthem led by Ms. Rhoda Sunga accompanied on the organ by Jojo Lemque.

In her Independence Day message, Ambassador Benavidez expressed the Philippines' gratitude to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei for the continuing support for peace and development in Southern Philippines, the crucial role it plays in the Committee of Eight of the Organisation of Islamic Conference and the implementation for the first time ever, of the Educational and Training Programme for Madrasah Principals and Teachers in Mindanao.

Independence Day messages from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Foreign Affairs Secretary Delia D. Albert, Labour Secretary Patricia A. Sto. Thomas and OWWA Administrator Virgilio R. Angelo were read.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
