More Professionals From Religious
Institute
By Azian Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Tahfiz Al-Quran (Memorisation of Quran) Institute is
capable of producing professionals, according to the Minister of
Education, Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Aziz, who was speaking during a prize
presentation ceremony for top students of the institute yesterday.
The institute has also produced
religious experts as well as students who are fluent in Arabic, `Tafsir'
and English languages, he added.
This was proven by the achievements
of Ak Md Irwan bin Pg Hj Idris, an undergraduate from the Tahfiz Al-Quran
Sultan Hj Hassanal Bolkiah Institute, who recently obtained a degree
with honours in Architectural Design Engineering from Cardiff, Wales.
He now holds the 'B.Sc Architectural Design Al-Hafiz'.
The aspiration of the institute is to
produce students who are able to memorise 30 'juz' of Quran fluently
in Arabic and master 'Tafsir' and the English language, as this would
enable students to pursue a professional career, according to Pehin
Dato Hj Abdul Aziz, who is also the Chairman of the Tahfiz Institute
Board.
Touching on the academic achievement
of the institute, Pehin Dato Hj Abdul Aziz highlighted that since its
establishment 11 years ago, the institute has maintained a record of
100 per cent passes in the GCE `A' level examinations. The achievement
of the students who took the `O' level examinations is among the best
in the country, he said.
Seven students of the institute have
succeeded in memorising 30 juz of Quran and are now qualified to be
called Al-Hafiz, he added.
The Minister of Education pointed out
that it is tough to earn a place at the institute.
Every year, over 200 applicants would
apply to study in the institute, including those who had achieved
excellent results from top secondary schools and colleges in the
country, he said. However, only 20 per cent of the applicants would be
accepted, judging by their abilities to memorise Quran.
"The idea behind such tough procedure
is to upgrade the quality of education and reading of Quran," the
Minister of Education stated. This helps create competition amongst
students and in turn, would motive them, he explained.
Pehin
Dato Hj Abdul Aziz, speaking on behalf of the institute, thanked His
Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam for his
kindness and contribution to finance the construction of the Tahfiz
Institute through the Yayasan foundation.
One of the star students yesterday
was Abdul Qayyum Hj Aminuddin who was awarded the `Exemplary Student
Award'.
He also received the Best Student
Award in Quran memorisation (Form Six level) and the Best Academic
Achievement Award (Form Six level). He was also named as the best
student in GCE 'A' level. --
