Filipinos In Brunei Warned To Get
Proper Papers Or Else Be Whipped
By Maya Salleh
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Filipinos without proper papers beware. They have
been warned not to work in Brunei without valid immigration chops or
face dire consequences.
A report cited that Manuel Imson, the Philippines Labour
and Employment Acting Secretary, warn Filipino
nationals working in the sultanate not to use their tourist visas to
work.
He also prompted Carmelina Velasquez, the Labour Attache to Brunei, to post notices in Filipino, English, Yakan, and Tausug in
Mindanao ports and airports to make transients aware of the tough
immigration laws in the country.
His stern warnings to Filipinos
seeking employment in the sultanate came about as the four-month grace
period granted by the Brunei ruler on February 12 against caning,
expired yesterday
With the enforcement of the new
Immigration Order this year, which came into force on February 12,
any immigration offender detained and prosecuted in court
after June 12 would be liable to be caned under a whipping sentence. It can be dangerous if anyone breaks the law.
In addition under Chapter 6 (1), any
foreigner who enters and stays in the country without any proper
Immigration Pass can be given a heavier jail sentence of up to two
years and also three strokes of the cane, if found guilty.
Furthermore, under Chapter 15 (2) of
the new Immigration Act, any foreigner who stays in the country
for more than 90 days after his or her Immigration Pass has expired,
can be sentenced to a jail term of two years and three strokes of the
cane, if found guilty.
The report also cited that last year,
Brunei had 11,935 documented workers and 3,800 undocumented workers.
