By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - An operation to nab fishermen without proper licences was carried out yesterday at the Pengkalan-Sibabau fish landing site.

In the two-hour operation, boats used by ten fishermen were thoroughly searched to ensure that no prohibited substances such as explosives were being used to catch fish. However, no violations were detected.

The operation was carried out jointly by 10 officers from the Fisheries Department, Royal Brunei Police Marine, Immigration and the Internal Security Department.

Codenamed ‘Kembura 11/04’, it also targeted foreign nationals who violated the immigration rule and quota by engaging in jobs other than stated in their travel document.

The enforcement officers were stationed in the area as early as 6am when most fishermen were about to go to sea. Similar operation was also being frequently carried out at other places such as at the boat wharf of the World Wide Club in Jalan Muara, Jerudong beach and in Kuala Tutong.

Fisheries Department with the help of other government agencies also conducted spot checks at sea to nab errant fishermen who conduct fishing activities close to the offshore oil rigs like Champion 7 and Maharaja Lela. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
