checks on one of the boats.
An operation to nab fishermen without
proper fishing licences was carried out yesterday at the
Pengkalan-Sibabau fish-landing site.
In the two-hour operation, boats used
by ten fishermen were thoroughly searched to ensure that no prohibited
substances such as explosives were being used to catch the fishes.
However, no violations were being detected.
The operation was carried out jointly
by 10 personnel from the Fisheries Department, Royal Brunei Police
Marine, Immigration and the Internal Security Department.
The operation codenamed 'Kembura
11/04', also targeted foreign nationals who violated the immigration
rule and quota by engaging in jobs other than stated in their travel
document.
The enforcement officers were
stationed at the vicinity as early as 6 am when most fishermen were
about to go to sea. Similar operations were also carried out at other
places such as at the boat wharf of the World Wide Club in Jln Muara,
Jerudong beach and in Kuala Tutong.
Fisheries Department with the help of
other government agencies also conducted spot checks at sea to nab
errant fishermen who conduct fishing activities close to the offshore
oil rigs like Champion 7 and Maharaja Lela.
