No Smoking Drive Targeted At Government Workers

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Ministry of Health yesterday focused on raising awareness on the dangers of smoking among government agencies in an effort to boost its ‘30 Days Without Cigarettes' campaign.

The campaign was aimed at officers under the Prime Ministers Office and hoped at further improving joint efforts among government agencies in dealing with tobacco use.

Apart from increasing awareness among members of the public, efforts to support smokers who intend to give up the habit will also be implemented, for example the Tobacco Cessation Programme.

It has been found that tobacco use has decreased in high-income countries.

A number of these countries such as Australia, Norway, Ireland and some states in America like California and New York, have banned smoking in public places.

In environments where there is an awareness on the dangers of smoking, the number of smokers has been proven to decrease.

The Ministry of Health urged both the government and private sectors to play their part in strengthening and ensuring the effectiveness of tobacco control, whether it be through executive or administrative orders. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
