Rakan Basmida To Fight Brunei’s Drug Problem

Bandar Seri Begawan – The Brunei Darussalam Anti Drug Association (Basmida) will establish a programme called 'Rakan Basmida'.

The programme will have recognized methods as a post and complementary care to the treatment and rehabilitation as well as prevention of cases related to drugs.

Datin Hajah Masni binte Haji Muhd Ali President Basmida, stated this in an interview with RTB after attending the First Asia Pacific Institute on Addictions in Singapore recently.

Datin Hajah Masni also explained the objectives of Rakan Basmida.

Under the programme the former drug addicts will be placed in a room where they can attend a meeting.

It is not called narcotic anonymous but the concept is more or less the same which is the Islamic concept where a doa will be read before and after the meeting.

Datin Haji Masni also said the concept of Rakan Basmida programme will be based on Singapore Drug Rehabilitation Centre, Pertapis.

Pertapis Centre, base its concept on treatment and rehabilitation to drugs addicts by using theraphytic Community and Narcotic Anonymous.

She said the centre is priority for the former of drugs addicts which are mainly Malay and Muslims addicts who are in the last phase of their treatment and rehabilitation from the drug rehabilitation centre under the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The centre also called half way house because the occupants can go home during the day time.

They are staying at the centre for six to twelve months.

In Singapore they are very lucky they have got SCORE, a group of companies provides jobs replacement for the drug addicts.

Pertapis uses the concept of TC and NA a Theraphytic Community and Narcotic Anonymous.

The first Asia Pacific Institute of Addictions conference was to share the knowledge about the latest methodology and policies.

Since its formation, Basmida has been able to give their inputs not only in drug abuse treatments of rehabilitation but also discussed a lot of prevention steps and efforts carried out by the association in helping the government agencies to control drug abuse problems in Brunei. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
