Ministry Warns Over Traditional
Medicine

Begawan - The Ministry of Health has detected an adulterant,
Chlorpheniramine, in "Maajun Kuat Sakit Pinggang", which is
manufactured by Abd Aziz bin Hj Mat, Tanjung Piandang, Perak,
Malaysia.
Chlorpheniramine,
the undeclared western drug found in this product, can cause severe
adverse reaction such as dizziness, lowering of blood pressure,
confusion, lack of coordination and drowsiness, the Ministry of
Health said in a press release.
This western drug should only be
used under the supervision of healthcare professionals. The
substance is classified as controlled under the Poisons Act.
The Ministry of Health received a
case of serious adverse reaction traced to this product. A female
diabetic patient in her 60s complained that she suffered from
swelling of face and legs and informed the doctor that she has been
taking the product.
The product consumed by the patient
is sold in the market in the guise of a traditional medicine for
rheumatism.
Upon laboratory analysis, the
result showed that the product contained Chlorpheniramine.
The Ministry of Health said that it
has not given any approval for the importation and sale of this
product. Following the laboratory analysis and report, the product
is now not allowed to be imported or sold in Brunei.
People who have been using this
product are advised to stop taking it immediately and to discard it.
If they experience any adverse reactions, they should consult their
doctors immediately.
Members of the public involved in
the retailing of tl product have been reminded that it is an offence
under t Poisons Act 1956 to sell any product that contains substance
controlled under the Act and the penalty f such an offence, upon
conviction, is a fine of $8,000 or s months' imprisonment. -- Courtesy of Borneo
