Friday Sermon Reiterates Role Of Parents

Bandar Seri Begawan - As the world develops into a borderless arena of communication and information, parents remain a major player in maintaining the integrity of Muslim youths in the country.

During the sermon yesterday, imams urged parents to keep a close eye on their children and take on firmer parenting strategies to keep the youth from straying towards destructive paths.

They advised parents to be more discerning when it comes to letting their teenage children go out at night with their friends especially during this festive season when the nation is celebrating His Majesty the Sultan and Yang DiPertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 62nd birthday.

Students, especially, would be greatly affected if their movements are not monitored and controlled, the sermon said.

At the sametime, the public was also advised to be aware of their respective responsibilities and duties, particularly religious ones such as the compulsory daily prayers.

They must also be sure that their work will not be severely affected by participating in the festivities.

Speaking of the youth in general, emphasising teenagers in particular, imams added that many can be observed the different sexes socialising freely without a care, indulging in inappropriate behaviour such as public displays of affection that they would casually pass off as `trendy' and socially acceptable.

Another aspect they highlighted was how the youth can also be observed dressing inappropriately in public, with clothes being too tight, too short or even see-through. This travesty described as fashion was also extended to include dyed hair.

Although external factors such as the media may affect their judgment and choices, they reminded that parents should instil strong religious values in their children from a young age to keep them on the right path and make the correct choices in life.

In addition, other relevant members of the community can contribute to the youth's continued positive development. -- Courtesy of The Brunei Times
