By Qistina Rangga

Bandar Seri Begawan - Deputy minister of Communications, Dato Paduka Hj Yusof Hj Abd Hamid yesterday paid a working visit to the new passenger ferry terminal in Serasa which is scheduled to begin operations at the end of the year.

The purpose of the visit was to monitor and ensure all projects for the improvement of public facilities in the transportation sector are progressing as planned, according to a public relation officer at the ministry.

The terminal is about 90 per cent completed according to Acting Director of Ports, Hj Souyono Salamat. "We are still waiting for the arrival of the pontoon which should be here during the first week of August this year."

Besides that, the terminal's driveway and parking lot have yet to be laid with tarmacs and the building itself is not fully-furnished yet, said the Acting Director.

The completion of the Serasa Terminal with the pontoon is expected to be done by late August.

During, the working visit, Hj Souyono disclosed that there are plans by the Tourism Board in collaboration with the Brunei Shell Petroleum (BSP) Company to install mega posters along the jetty showcasing places of interests as well as the flora and fauna of Brunei.

In this regard, BSP is looking to set up an information centre for tourists at the terminal, according to the Acting Director.

Meanwhile, Hj Souyono assured passengers that ferry ticket prices will not change with the opening of the new terminal in which the construction costs over $4 million and will have four lanes of immigration processing counters for both departing and arriving passengers.

It was an investment to produce "shorter, safer and faster processing of passengers", said Hj Souyono.

The building is equipped with a spacious departure and arrival area, as well as a holding lounge for the comfort of passengers. The jetties and passenger embarkation and disembarkation pontoons have been designed with enhanced comfort and safety measures in mind.

Security measures have also been enhanced for baggage and passenger security checks.
