10% More Ads For Job Vacancies
By Hadi DP Mahmud
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Marketing executives, IT technicians and sales
assistants topped the "help wanted" list last year, as the number of
job vacancies advertised in the sultanate increased by 10.1 per cent
last year, according to the Department of Economic Planning and
Development's (JPKE) latest economic bulletin released yesterday.
Out of the nine major occupational
categories, technicians and associate professionals were the most
advertised, followed by service and sales workers, professionals and
clerks, according to the "Help Wanted Index" the JPKE has replicated
from the United States.
The index, which in the US is
sensitive to business cycles and growth in the private sector
economy, is a barometer of the job market that represents the level
of business confidence in the economy. The JPKE replicated the index
in the sultanate with some modifications and sourced the data from a
local English daily, stated JPKE in the bulletin.
The demand for legislators,
administrators, managers, professionals, technicians, associate
professionals, clerks and elementary occupations were reported to
have increased last year compared to 2006.
Job vacancies in service and sales
workers; skilled agricultural and fishery workers; production
craftsmen and related trade workers; plant and machine operators and
assemblers remained stable or declined.
The Labour Department said earlier
in May this year that 95.3 per cent of the 7,766 registered job
seekers had only Form Five or lower qualifications, while 3.3 per
cent of the job seekers possess vocational and technical and
university qualifications.
Home Affairs Minister Pehin Orang
Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri. Setia Hj Adanan Begawan Pehin Siraja
Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Md Yusof urged job seekers to be less
choosy when applying for positions that may not be as comfortable or
"glamorous" during the launch of the 2008 Job Fair. -- Courtesy of
