Bad Weather Hits Jerudong Wet
Market Business
By Asri Razak
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Stallholders at the Jerudong outdoor market are
experiencing slow business due to the recent spate of bad weather in
the country.
Business has been affected by the
wet and windy weather, a fruit-vendor told The Brunei Times.
He said that as result of the
strong winds, umbrellas used to cover wares for sale have been blown
off.
Relevant authorities have already
discussed to replace current rooftops with new ones, but vendors are
still waiting, said the fruit vendor who added that umbrellas
purchased personally are costly. "Whenever the skies become dark, we
pack up our things early," he said, adding that it affects business
of $50 per day. The vendor said in the past, sales were $100 per
day, but now business has been not so good due to bad weather.
During fruit harvest season,
business usually picks up as Bruneians love to purchase fresh local
fruits, especially those that are imported from neighbouring Miri,
said the vendor, who also travels across the border to bring
vegetables and fruits not available in the country.
On a good day the vendors at the
Jerudong wet market can make profit of $50.
Earlier, they used to pay $100 per
month rent for the space allocated to them, said vegetable vendor,
who had been paying that amount for the past seven years until the
change.
She added, "Now, the rent has been
lowered to $15, after the minister (of Home Affairs) visited the
market. The lowering of the rent has helped the vendors.
Earlier this year, Minister of Home
Affairs, Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Adanan
Begawan Pehin Siraja Khatib Dato Seri Setia Hj Mohd Yusof conducted
working visits to the four wet markets of the country. The visit was
meant to monitor, repair and upgrade the condition of public
markets. -- Courtesy of
