Promoting Joint Tourism
By Kartika Rahman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The 4th BIMP-EAGA Joint Tourism Development Cluster
Meeting concluded, yesterday with the finalisation of
recommendations, which was made official with a signing ceremony by
Director of Tourism, Sheikh Jamaluddin bin Sheikh Mohammad at the
Centerpoint Hotel in Gadong.
It was attended by 30 participants
comprising private and public sector stakeholders active in driving
the promotion of joint tourism in BIMP-EAGA.
The objective of the seminar was to
introduce the value-chain approach to BIMP-EAGA tourism
stakeholders, the mapping of BIMP-EAGA tourism value chain and
analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats; to
understand the roles and requirements in tourism development and
develop an action plan based on the principal of the value-chain
approach.
The meeting noted that the original
vision of BIMP-EAGA is to complement - and add value to the region.
Joint tourism efforts in the past
have revealed resiliency of the sub-region despite various
challenges. For instance, Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei Darussalam-had
established the Borneo package in
November of 1996, but discontinued
it due to the haze problem in Southeast Asia faced at that time. The
Package was later relaunched in 2000 but is currently discontinued
due to the SARS issue. Such continuity of efforts became focal
points for future recommendations and strategic plans.
During the meeting, finalisations
were made for the implementation of BIMP-EAGA Roadmap 2006-2010 and
BIMP-EAGA Action Plan 2006-2010, as well as initiatives to undertake
joint tourism marketing and promotion, human resources development
and air accessibility. -- Courtesy of Borneo
