Single Mother's Takes Off At Lumut 1

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Single Mother's Project is a proactive effort particularly in providing guidance and advice and creating exemplary single mothers who would have developed themselves and proven to themselves and to their family that they could stand on their own two feet.

This was stated by the Acting Belait District Officer, Awg Hj Mohamad Hj Abd Rahman, in his speech as chief guest at the launching ceremony of the Single Mother's Project for Lumut 1 area in the Belait District, held recently at the Balai Raya of Kampong Lumut. The project is run by the Kg Lumut 1 Consultative Council.

The objective of the project is to assist single mothers who face hardship, to make efforts towards changing their lives without having to continuously rely solely on the government or any other relevant organisations.

As an initial step, the project will focus on making traditional dry foods in an activity that could be customised to bring potential success in the future. The traditional dry savoury foods would be made available for sale and marketed through a few outlets such as wedding catering services, retail shops throughout the Belait District and through public reservations. The products could also be sold directly at the Tamu in Seria and Kuala Belait, at Gerai Ramadhan stalls as well as at festive ceremonies in the Belait District.

The project will be initiated at Balai Raya Kampong Lumut I and the operation will commence soon after. To finance the project, all members of the Kampong Lumut I Consultative Council had contributed B$50 each for the project's capital.

There are currently six single mothers residing in the Lumut 1 area.

Also at the event, the Acting Belait District Officer received a cheque worth B$1,000 from Wong Wah Seng, a member of the Belait District business community, for the celebration of His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 60' Birthday.
