Brunei Recalls Seven Cadbury
Chocolate Products

Begawan - Brunei's Ministry of Health is recalling seven
Cadbury Chocolate products made in Britain following recent reports of
Salmonella contamination.
Products included in the recall are:
Cadbury Dairy Milk Turkish 250g,
Cadbury Dairy Milk Caramel 250g,
Cadbury Dairy Milk Mint 250g,
Cadbury Dairy Milk 8 Chunk,
Cadbury Dairy Milk 1 kg,
Cadbury Dairy Milk Button Easter Egg 105g, and
Cadbury Freddo 10p.
According to the records of the
Department of Food Imports Administration, Quality Control Division
and Food Health of the ministry, these affected chocolate products are
not imported to the country.
Most of the Cadbury Chocolates that
are retailed in the country are manufactured either in Australia or
Malaysia. However, the Health Services Department will continue to
monitor the situation to ensure that made-in-Britain products are not
imported and sold in the country.
According to a recent Singapore news
release, about a million Cadbury products were recalled in the UK and
Ireland after finding traces of Salmonella from a UK factory. Those
who had purchased the said products were urged to return them to
outlets from which the chocolates were bought.
Under the Health (Food) 2000
regulation, prepared food products can never be contaminated by
pathogenic micro-organisms including Salmonella.
Normally food that are contaminated
with Salmonella do not show signs of deterioration and cannot be
detected through the sense of smell.
Consuming contaminated food may lead
to Salmonellosis, a type of food poisoning that shows symptoms of high
fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, stomachache and diarrhea.
Those with a weaker immunity
including young children and -the elderly, Salmonellosis will result
in more serious problems.
The ministry said as specified under
the Section 9 clause (1) sub-para (i) public health food act 1998,
those who serve, sell or import food that is deemed harmful to health
will be sentenced to five years in jail or fined or both.
