Story
By CT Hj Mahmod
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Tony Fernandes, founder and Chief Executive Officer
of the no-frills airline AirAsia, is to tell his success story to an
appreciable audience today.
He will be a keynote speaker at the
Asia Inc Forum's roundtable on Brunei's economy held at the Jerudong
Park Country Club.
The man who revolutionised the air
travel industry in Malaysia and who pioneered low cost travel in Asia,
will deliver a talk entitled "Starting a Revolution: The AirAsia
Story".
Today's roundtable, the first event
under the 2005 Corporate Partnership Programme involving TOTAL, BLNG,
HSBC, DST, BearingPoint and RBA, will review and analyse key economic
developments within Brunei and the region.
Focusing on the theme ‘New
Challenges, New Ideas, New Directions’, the roundtable forms as a
platform for leading figures in both the public and private sectors to
discuss challenges and opportunities arising from the regional
economic development and its impact on Brunei.
The 80 top movers and shakers will
exchange ideas and discuss with invited speakers on how Brunei can
contribute towards a sustainable economic future for its people.
Among the topics of interest at the
roundtable is whether Asean can compete with the economic reemergence
of China and India, a topic led by Mr P.K. Basu, an expert with
Khazanah Nasional, the investment arm of the Malaysian government.
This discussion will examine how
China and India are transforming the regional economic landscape as
well as address the question of Asean's competitiveness and the
options open to it.
The session on reviewing recent local
developments in the country will be facilitated by Mr. Timothy Ong,
Acting Chairman of Brunei Economic Development Board, which will be
followed by an open forum discussion on future challenges and
opportunities.
The roundtable will conclude with the
luncheon address by Tony Fernandes, who will share his success story
on how AirAisa has grown from just two Boeing 737-300s to its present
fleet of 28 and operating over 100 domestic and international flights
within three years.
Today AirAsia has formed successful
joint ventures in Thailand and Indonesia and holds a 49 per cent stake
in both companies. -- Courtesy of Borneo
