Cagers All Set For Action

Begawan - A total of 15 teams are ready to vie for honours in
the Sultan's Birthday Cup Basketball Tournament which kicks off
tomorrow at Chung Hwa Middle School Basketball Hall at 6:30pm. The
tournament will end on Aug 6.
A trophies hand-over ceremony for the
tournament was held yesterday at the Orchid Garden Hotel.
On hand to present the trophies and
medals was Lim Chee Wah, the Purchasing Manager of Syarikat Perniagaan
Malar Setia to John Foo Chen Teen, Chairman of the Organising
Committee.
John Foo was delighted in seeing more
teams taking part in this year's tournament.
"We are very happy the basketball
tournament this year is on a bigger scale," remarked John.
"There are 15 teams vying for the
Sultan's Birthday Cup. We would like to also thank the sponsor
Coca-Cola for supporting us the past two years," John added.
Also witnessing the handing over
ceremony was David Yau, Operations Manager of F&N Coca-Cola (Brunei)
Sdn Bhd, the main sponsor of the event.
"Coca-Cola is proud to be part of
this great event," said David. "Basketball is getting more popular
among our youth and we are pleased to be supporting the development of
the game," he added.
The tournament is organised by Brunei
Basketball Association. The top eight men teams will qualify for
another tournament - the Coca-Cola Basketball Challenge Trophy 2005 -
which will start two weeks after the Sultan's Birthday Cup ended.
Winners of the men's division in the
Sultan's Birthday Cup will walk away with a prize money of $800 plus
trophies and medals, $500 plus trophies and medals for the first
runner-up and $300 plus trophies and medals for second runnerup.
The four women basketball teams are
set to play on July 17. Winners will be richer by $300 plus trophies
and medals, while second place will win $200 plus trophies and medals
and $100 plus trophies and medals.
The opening ceremony will be held at
8pm tomorrow and will be officially launched by Brunei Basketball
Association patron Dato Paduka Lim Beng Thai. --
