Bandar Seri Begawan - A total of 15 teams are ready to vie for honours in the Sultan's Birthday Cup Basketball Tournament which kicks off tomorrow at Chung Hwa Middle School Basketball Hall at 6:30pm. The tournament will end on Aug 6.

A trophies hand-over ceremony for the tournament was held yesterday at the Orchid Garden Hotel.

On hand to present the trophies and medals was Lim Chee Wah, the Purchasing Manager of Syarikat Perniagaan Malar Setia to John Foo Chen Teen, Chairman of the Organising Committee.

John Foo was delighted in seeing more teams taking part in this year's tournament.

"We are very happy the basketball tournament this year is on a bigger scale," remarked John.

"There are 15 teams vying for the Sultan's Birthday Cup. We would like to also thank the sponsor Coca-Cola for supporting us the past two years," John added.

Also witnessing the handing over ceremony was David Yau, Operations Manager of F&N Coca-Cola (Brunei) Sdn Bhd, the main sponsor of the event.

"Coca-Cola is proud to be part of this great event," said David. "Basketball is getting more popular among our youth and we are pleased to be supporting the development of the game," he added.

The tournament is organised by Brunei Basketball Association. The top eight men teams will qualify for another tournament - the Coca-Cola Basketball Challenge Trophy 2005 - which will start two weeks after the Sultan's Birthday Cup ended.

Winners of the men's division in the Sultan's Birthday Cup will walk away with a prize money of $800 plus trophies and medals, $500 plus trophies and medals for the first runner-up and $300 plus trophies and medals for second runnerup.

The four women basketball teams are set to play on July 17. Winners will be richer by $300 plus trophies and medals, while second place will win $200 plus trophies and medals and $100 plus trophies and medals.
