Immortalising The Faces Of Borneo
By Jon Tarnpoi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - American painter Stephen Bennett is in Borneo again.
This time around Bennett is on a special project that will see him
painting the outstanding characters of folks from the Island of
Borneo, particularly Brunei Darussalam.
Bennett will travel throughout the
Sultanate seeking the right `canvas character' for his paintings.
The main idea behind the project is
to immortalise characters of Borneo and Brunei Darussalam. Finding
both places of great interest, Bennet decided to capture -through
paintings - the countless number of beautiful faces and places found
on the island.
Bennett has travelled extensively,
painting dynamic portraits of the world's diverse and colourful faces
in the last 12 years.
He hopes that during his hop around
Borneo, he will be able to spend time with both the indigenous and
nonindigenous people, learning about their culture and preserving
their identity through his portrait painting.
Bennet also intends to set up an
educational art workshop targeting both students and local
communities.
Presently, he is projecting suitable
charities in Brunei to auction some of his paintings, which includes a
long-term exhibition at the Empire Hotel.
Bennett sees his paintings as a form
of tourism promotion as he travels around meeting cultural figures.
This move will eventually lead to
promotion of the Borneo culture - through local and international
exhibitions - thus, playing a role in sustaining eco-tourism
development. --
