Snake-Catching Tops 'Special
Emergency’ Calls At Fire Services
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The next time you go to the restroom you had better
watch-out! Creepy-crawlies may be lurking inside your toilet bowl.
This was one of the experiences
shared by officers of the Fire Services Department with other
government officials yesterday when highlighting snake-catching as one
of the `special emergency' services provided to the public.
Aside from the fact that
snake-catching made up the highest number of calls received by Fire
Services, the Department also revealed other special emergency
services offered including rescuing people who are trapped (such as
inside a lift), clearing fallen trees that block the road,
switching-off emergency alarms, stopping gas leakages, clearing
chemical spillage, and handling industrial chemicals.
Other services provided include
rescuing victims in boat accidents as well as landslide victims,
rescuing people who attempt to commit suicide, salvage services and
rescuing jungle trekkers lost in the forest.
This was highlighted by Awg Norzali
bin Apong, Deputy Officer of Fire Stations during a safety and fire
control briefing attended by a group of senior government officials
and staff from the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources,
yesterday.
The objective of the briefing was to
raise awareness on the need to upgrade knowledge and training on the
aspects of safety and fire control in a building, in a joint effort to
maintain public safety, government properties and the immediate
surrounding.
The briefing was also meant to
enhance knowledge on the use of safety equipment and systems as well
as to ensure that the building's surrounding is always safe. Fire
Services personnel also gave a demonstration' on the correct way to
extinguish fires. --
