Tamu Kianggeh Gets A Facelift
By Azrol Azmi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - In an effort to beautify and maintain cleanliness of
the capital of Brunei Darussalam, the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal
Board has recently relocated the fruit stalls along the Kianggeh river
to a better and cleaner site.
Sheran
bin Shaari, Head of Municipal Project Division, told the Bulletin that
it is timely for the fruit stalls to have a new site which will not
only promote their fruit selling business but also help to beautify
the capital and ensure the safety of the vendors and the public
members.
Works have been in progress since
last weekend to relocate the fruit stalls located at PGGMB building
and along the bridge to a new site.
The vendors happily obliged to the
decision of relocation and some even helped in demolishing the old
makeshift stalls in their support to beautify the capital.
According to Sheran Shaari, works
were being carried out in stages. The existing Tamu Kianggeh area was
first being reconstructed and equipped with roofing and space for
vendors. Such effort will also help to promote the area as a tot -gist
attraction in the capital city.
Before, Tamu Kianggeh was a
dull-looking area with erected green tents but now with proper roofing
for the stalls, the open-air environment would surely attract more
visitors to the market.
There is also an area allocated for
seasonal fruit sellers who can sell any local products every Friday
and Sunday, said Sheran Shaari.
This is a step taken by the Municipal
Board to provide space for makeshift vendors to sell their products to
meet the local demand for seasonal fruits. Food vendors who wish to
make extra income can also trade here on Friday and Sunday.
On the previously occupied area,
Sheran Shaari said that the place would be turned into a parking area
and plans are in the pipeline to build a garden there as well. But all
these would be done in stages, he added.
On the Subok and Kianggeh River, he
said under the Flood Mitigation Scheme, the Public Works Department
with the cooperation of the Municipal Board will improve the river
waterways.
The Kianggeh River near Tamu Kianggeh
in the capital will serve as a means of transport for vendors to bring
in their fruits and vegetables in bulk in boats.
Sediments from the river are being
excavated to deepen the river in the hope of solving the flooding
problems during heavy downpours. --
