Prince Qawi Leads QAF To Polo Victory
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begwan - Prince Abdul Qawi, the Executive Deputy Chairman and Director of QAF Brunei, scored a hattrick and captained the QAF polo team to an impressive 8-5 win over Golazo in the first round of a polo tournament to mark His Majesty's 58th birthday held at the Jerudong Park yesterday.

Prince Abdul Qawi opened the scoring within a few seconds of the first chukka, and from then on, the QAF team was in total command of the match. The enthusiastic crowd didn't have to wait too long for more excitement as Ahmad Khan slotted in two more goals soon after to widen the QAF lead.

Not to be outdone, Prince Abdul Qawi followed suit with a brace of goals himself, and by the end of the first chukka, QAF were way ahead of Golazo by 5-0.

QAF continued from where they left off in the second chukka - Haji Karim scoring to further extend QAF's lead. But Golazo were made of sterner stuff; playing without team captain Pengiran Anak Abdul Ali, Golazo closed the gap to 6-2 thanks a goal each by Pengiran Izad Ryan and Pengiran Husaini.

QAF added another goal in the third chukka through Haji Karim to go 7-2 ahead, but Golazo's Saquid Mawa Khan notched one in to maintain the 4-goal difference.

It was a very determined Golazo though, in the fourth and last chukka, when goals by Pg Izad and Mawaz Khan threatened to table the tables on QAF. Ardi Hapsoro Hamidjojo, however, helped put QAF back in the driving seat with a goal, which effectively took the fight out of Golazo.

The two teams will meet again in the second round tomorrow, and it may be a different ball game altogether as Pg Anak Abdul Ali is expected to be back to lead the Golazo team as they seek to turn things around in their favour. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
