Drug Abuse Smashes Brunei Families
Friday Sermon Warns
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Drug abuse has gained such a significant march on
Brunei that it is smashing up local families.
|
This
revelation is contained in yesterday’s Friday sermon or the
Khutbah which devoted its main message on the growing menace of
drug misuse in Brunei.
The
sermon, which is delivered at all mosques in the sultanate,
highlighted that drug abuse is among the reasons married couples
divorce nowadays.
Drug
users or addicts who have families could end up losing their loved
ones and their happiness, the congregation heard.
Not
knowing enough about Islam is among the reasons a person could
turn to misusing drugs.
The
Khutbah reminded people to distance themselves from drugs, saying
the misuse of drugs could make people forget themselves, religion
and even forget the world because drugs have a very bad effect on
the mind.
“Drug
abuse is an illness that cannot be allowed to spread. It has to be
stopped or cured promptly and its causes identified quickly so
that measures could be taken to eradicate the menace. However, any
measure to rid of it must have the cooperation of all parties,”
the sermon said. |

It also stressed that a good
understanding of religion is needed in order to avoid negative
influences.
This is because a person with a
strong foundation in Islamic teachings will not be easily influenced
by friends or others to commit bad deeds. However, there were cases of
former drug users returning to drugs.
And sadly, this happens when they are
discarded by their family and the community.
The Khutbah stressed the parents'
role in helping to change former drug users’ direction in life.
This includes giving them the love
and care, religious guidance and the support that they need in their
new life.
Meanwhile, a panellist at the current
National Convention on Health Promotion offered the latest statistics
for last month.
Out of 32,182 students in 28
secondary schools nationwide in June, 33 were declared as positive
drug users by the Narcotics Control Bureau, of which 29 were Malay
males and four Malay females.
In 1993, the Ministry of Education
set up what it called the Education, Prevention and Misuse of Drugs
Unit, made up of education officers, teachers and counselling staff to
teach students about the dangers as well as contain the threat of
drugs.
Citing social and even personal
family problems as the main causes for a youth to turn to drugs, they
highlighted the importance and support that the whole of society must
play if the drug menace could ever be eliminated from Brunei’s shores.
