Brunei’s Anti Smoke Signals Fire Up Strong Support At Health Meet

Bandar Seri Begawan – Sultanate’s anti smoke signals fired up much support at a current health seminar that ended yesterday.

The State Mufti's fatwa on banning cigarettes and smoking received strong support from the Seminar on Health Promotion held for past four days, reports Radio Television Brunei (RTB).

The support was contained in the resolution adopted at the end of the seminar.

The 29-point resolution, among other strategies, welcomed the legislation on tobacco for Brunei and the signing of Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC).

Steps on effective prevention based on evidence as well as good practise and innovation should be implemented, delegates were told.

Awareness among the public on the danger of tobacco and its consumption should be enhanced through various approaches by the government and non government sectors as well as through regional and international cooperation.

Programmes to socialise the giving up of smoking should be given priority to motivate, encourage and support smokers by forming the tobacco cessation clinics and support group.

At the same time, environment health care should be improved through various methods such as public health, health promotion and enforcement of laws with committed cooperation of government and non government agencies, and also the active involvement of the community.

Agencies responsible for food health control should unite towards ensuring the food safety in the market.

All agencies should also follow the standards in accordance to the international regulations, the delegates heard.

Islam has the best and proper system under the health promotion aspects such as health care, dieting, avoiding bad habits which can harm the health especially smoking.

Practising a healthy lifestyle based on the Islamic teachings should be promoted and socially acceptable.
