Brunei’s Hotels And Restaurants In
Trouble Face Serious Dip
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei’s hotel and restaurant industry is taking an
alarmingly downward dip currently.
|
The
Economic Planning and Development Department statistics shows a
seven per cent drop in the sultanate’s hotel and restaurant sectors
in this year’s first quarter compared to the same period last
year.
Pehin
Dato Haji Suyoi, the acting Education Minister, in quoting these
figures said however, the long-term prospect was hopeful.
Despite
the decrease, the Acting Minister was confident that in the long
run, these sectors will continue to contribute towards the
economic and employment development in the country.
The
hospitality sector has a very huge potential as it attracts
tourists helping to diversify the country’s economy.
He
highlighted the matter at the Apprenticeship Training Agreement
Signing Ceremony 2004 and presentation of Apprentice of the Year
Awards for Professional Cookery and Service at the Jerudong Park
Country Club yesterday.
Pehin
Dato Haji Suyoi said hospitality and tourism sectors have been
identified by Monitor Group as one of the economic clusters that
could attract more foreign investors to Brunei. |

The field includes eco-tourism,
health tourism and sport tourism.
He called on apprentices to take the
opportunity to learn more on practical matters.
In professional cookery and service,
he said, one could take artistic cooking to perfection which could win
hearts.
And like any other art, the more you
cook, the more you learn the more sense it makes.
Fine dining experience, he added, was
not necessarily to be available at five-star hotels or at major
establishments but at small restaurants as well.
The function was held for the start
of the fourth intake of the professional Cookery and Service
Apprenticeship Training Scheme shared among Sultan Saiful Rijal
Technical College, Jerudong Park Country Club, Orchid Garden Hotel,
Royal Brunei Catering and Sheraton Utama Hotel.
Fourteen apprentices were selected to
undergo two-and-a-half year training.
The main objective of the
Professional Cookery and Service is to develop Bruneian youths for a
career in the catering industry.
Meanwhile, two chefs were selected
for their best culinary skills in the Apprenticeship Training Scheme.
