Top squash stars on show

Begawan - Brunei will be the focus of the international squash
circuit scene with the start of the first-ever Brunei International
Squash Women's Open 2004 where top international players will be vying
for honours.
To mark the launch of the
competition, the guest-of-honour, Dato Paduka Hj Yakub bin Abu Bakar,
the Deputy Minister of Finance, hit the gong in the opening ceremony
which was held at Jerudong Park and Country Club yesterday.
During the ceremony, the top 20
international squash women players were introduced to Dato Paduka Hj
Yakub and the sponsors in attendance by Andrew Shelly, the Executive
Director of WISPA (Women's International Squash Player Assocociation).
The top 20 international players
include world No 2 Rachael Grinham, world No.3 Vanessa Atkinson, world
No. 5 Natalie Grinham, world No. 6 Fiona Geaves, world No.7 Linda
Elriani and Asian squash sensation Nicol David of Malaysia.
The President of the Brunei Squash
Racket Association and JPCC, Hj Denis bin Hj Roslee said he was
delighted with the participation of the top class women squash players
in the first-ever Brunei International Squash Women's Open 2004.
He added that Brunei would be the
focal point of the international squash community especially with the
exposure from international media and a one-hour programme done by
WISPA which will be telecast throughout the world.
JPCC
will play host to the final round which will start today and the
quarterfinals tomorrow while the semifinals and the final will be
played at the National Squash Centre from July 30-31.
The public are invited to watch their
favourite stars in action as all the matches are free of charge. All
games start at 4pm. --
