Two Local Men Face Jail And Caning For Mischief, Theft Charges

Bandar Seri Begawan - Two local men are facing an imprisonment sentence and caning if found guilty of mischief and theft charges.

Jalani bin Haji Mat Diris and Iskandar bin Haji Duraman, both aged 36, pleaded not guilty to committing mischief by causing wrongful damage to two aluminium doors belonging to His Majesty's government.

The offence carries an imprisonment for a term which may extend to 5 years and whipping of not less than 2 strokes under Section 427 of the Penal Code.

Meanwhile, Jalani pleaded guilty to committing theft of the said two pieces of aluminium doors from the vicinity of Simpang Batang Mitus, Kampong Lamunin a week ago.

However, Iskandar claimed trial to the charge. He also denied stealing a Toyota Super Kijang bearing the registration number BK 164 belonging to Mustain bin Matsuro from the vicinity of Jalan Terunjing eight days ago. Jalani, meanwhile, admitted to the offence.

Nor Hafizah binti Ahmad¸ Prosecuting Officer, yesterday said the court would pass the sentence on Jalani after the trial.

The Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday fixed August 23 to 25 for trial. Both were released on $5,000 court bail or 2 local sureties pending hearing. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
