Bandar Seri
Begawan - The 4th Islamic Solidarity Sports Federation (ISSF)
Sports Medicine & Anti-Doping (SMAD) Course held its closing ceremony
yesterday.
HRH Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah,
President of the Brunei Darussalam Olympic Council, opened the course.
The closing event was officiated by
Awg Hj Jemat Hj Ampal, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture
Youth and Sports, on behalf of Pehin Dato (Dr) Hj Awg Hussain,
Minister of Culture Youth and Sports.
The course was very timely with the
recent launching of the National Health Promotion Convention
officiated by His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara
Brunei Darussalam, the minister's closing speech said.
As part of promoting a healthy
lifestyle campaign, awareness of drug-free sports is one of the steps
to be given priority in the efforts to achieve the goal.
As the Sultanate has recently signed
the Copenhagen Declaration on World Anti-Doping Code, the presence of
distinguished professionals in sports medicine over the past few days
had certainly given some valuable insights particularly in the various
aspects of the global code on doping, he said.
Most importantly, said the minister,
the introduction of the ISSF Sports Medicine and
Anti-Doping Course four years ago had
strengthened collaborations to join in the global call for anti-doping
in sports.
"Upgrading and instilling awareness
in our people especially in sports medicine profession, in every
aspect of doping in sports, and the danger it represents," is one of
the objectives of the course. It is pertinent for every athlete to be
reminded that one can still excel in sports without resorting to
illegal drugs.
It is now timely and appropriate for
a national programme on drug-free sports to be formulated and
implemented for the benefit of our young athletes, a programme which
would produce professional sportsmen and sportswomen who are able to
shoulder greater responsibilities to face the evergrowing challenges
in the future.
Showing that science and sports
medicine have firm and healthy foundations, the 3-day course made it
clear that the need for ongoing research into current trends to build
upon those foundations and gathering such as this should not be
regarded as merely a one-off process but an ongoing initiative, he
said.
HRH Prince Sultan bin Fahad bin Abd
Aziz, Chairman of ISSF, noted that the organisation of the 4th SMAD
course 'in a new format is for the first time under the ISSF Sports
Medicine and Anti-Doping committee. It takes over the responsibility
of organising and supervising the series of SMAD courses. --
