Smoking is ‘Haram’ Declares State
Mufti Pehin Dato Haji Abdul Aziz

Bandar Seri
Begawan – According to Pehin Dato Ustaz Awang Haji Abdul Aziz
the State Mufti cigarettes and smoking are ruled haram.
This is contained in Page 84 of the
book entitled Rokok Dan Merokok featuring a series of instructions by
the State Mufti over the last year based on two questionnaires put
forward by certain authorities covering the penalty of cigarettes and
smoking.
According to the book it is
undeniable that smoking adversely effects life and that there is no
other alternative to cigarettes and smoking other than condemnation.
One cannot give any valid reasons or
to take lightly of the issue that causes ruin in man.
Islam abhors cigarettes and smoking
and hence Islam is a saviour.
Based on religious lectures and
strong scientific findings cigarettes and smoking are considered haram.
The ban on cigarettes and smoking is
based on lectures and scientific findings, although the Al-Quran and
hadis did not specifically state on the rulings of cigarettes and
smoking.
The State Mufti laid the emphasis in
an exclusive interview with Radio Television Brunei (RTB).
He pointed out that there is a factor
making cigarettes and smoking haram.
Cigarettes and smoking adversely
affects one's health and with every puff a smoker is inhaling four
thousand different chemicals most of which are deadly.
According to the State Mufti from the
Islamic point of view consuming food and beverage that are toxic are
haram.
According to the State Mufti, every
whiff the smoker inhaled four thousand poisonous chemicals which is
against the teachings of Islam, regardless of the quantity be it a
drop or in large portion.
He went on to say that the
manufacturing of such products is deemed haram because they contain
poisons.
He reiterated that cigarettes contain
a large number of toxic chemicals.
Non smokers are not spared the risks
of cigarette smoking.
Inhalation of second hand smoke has
proven to more significantly more damaging.
The State Mufti pointed out that
according to research for every second hand smoke inhaled it equates
to smoking of five sticks of cigarettes.
A family with a smoker among them is
more vulnerable to the effects of second hand smoke, especially
children who cannot protect themselves.
Should smokers maintain the unhealthy
habit of smoking only affecting themselves and not others, the
assumption is wrong, because life and health are something that should
not be taken for granted for they are gifts from Allah the Almighty.
He underlined the importance of these
gifts.
One should not abuse such gifts from
heaven even though they do not affect anyone else.
The precious gifts entrusted by Allah
the Almighty on man should be safeguarded and revered, hence the stiff
condemnation on smoking. --
