UBD launches Science & Technology

Universiti
Brunei Darussalam yesterday held its opening ceremony for the Science
& Technology Week 2004 at the Green Room, Staff & Student Centre, UBD.
A total of 16 booths from both
non-government and government organisations will be exhibiting their
Science and Technology activities throughout the three-day exhibition.
Among the exhibitors participating in
the Science & Technology week are DST Group, JTB and Oil & Gas
Discovery Centre.
Apart from the exhibits, a series of
lectures on topics of Science and Technology, delivered by both
invited speakers and staff of the Faculty of Science, UBD, will be
held throughout the event.
Present at the ceremony was Awang Hj.
Abd Rashid bin Hj Abd. Rahman, Director General of Public Works,
Ministry of Development, in his capacity as the personal
representative for the guest of honour, Awang Hj. Jumin bin Hj. Marsal,
Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Development.
In his speech, Hj. Abd. Rashid Hj Abd.
Rahman, congratulated the Faculty of Science for the initiative to
promote Science & Technology in Brunei Darussalam and for organising
an event that would benefit the participants of the Science &
Technology Week 2004.
He added that the contributions of
Science and Technology to humankind are tremendous, with innovations
inside the industry having changed the face of the global market.

Abd. Rashid Hj. Abd. Rahman also highlighted the establishment of the
National Committee of Science and Technology in 1984, to ensure that
science and technology effectively contributes to economy,
environment, social and culture, and more recently the provisions set
aside in the 7th & 8th National Development Plan, for the development
of infrastructure and human resources and the promotion of science and
technology as steps taken by the government of Brunei Darussalam in
recognising the importance of Science and Technology.
Also present at the ceremony were Dr
Hj. Ismail Hj Duraman, Vice-Chancellor of Universiti of Brunei
Darussalam, Pg. Dr. Hjh Rahmah Pg. Hj. Jadid, Deputy Vice Chancellor
of Universiti of Brunei Darussalam, Dr Zohrah Hj Sulaiman, Dean of
Science and Chairperson of the Organising Committee of Science
Technology week.
