By Achong Tanjong

Bandar Seri Begawan - The 20th Congress of the Federation of Asian Photographic Art will be held in Kaohsiung, Taiwan in 2006.

Photographic Society of Brunei Darussalam held the handing over of the congress baton and banner at the closing ceremony of the five-day 19th FAPA Congress it hosted.

Hj. Mohd Yusof Mohd. Yassin, President of Brunei Darussalam Photographic Society and chairman of the 19t1 FAPA Congress, presented the banner and baton to Dr. James Chen, Representative of Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Brunei Darussalam.

Haji Mohd. Yusof said the congress had gathered more than 200 photographers from Asian countries.

The Brunei Photographic Society hosted it for the second time. The first was the 14th Congress of FAPA in 1994.

The countries that participated in the congress were Taiwan, Pakistan, Nepal, Thailand, Japan, Vietnam, Switzerland, Indonesia, China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the Philippines. There were more than 80 participants from host country, Brunei Darussalam.

The delegation from Taiwan sent the biggest group from overseas with 41 participants headed by Mr. Hsin-Chuan Chou, the president of Chinese Art Photographers Association (CAPA). They comprised of professional and amateur photographers.

Haji Mohd. Yusof said various activities held during the congress included the visit to Brunei places of interests like the Water village, Malay Technology Museum, Cultural Show, Asia Photo Exhibition and Grand Colourful Photographic Outing "Bersama Rakyat" in Jerudong.

The Grand outing "Bersama Rakyat" was one of the highlights of the congress that gave the opportunity to congress participants to capture the lively cultures and tradition of the country.

They had a closer look at His Majesty the Sultan and members of the Royal families during the get-together with the subjects.

The July 16-20 congress was chosen to coincide with His Majesty's 58th Birthday celebration when Brunei was full of colours, cultures and ceremonies.

As the saying goes, a picture tells a thousand words and these photographers brought home many sweet memories full of joy and experience to be shared with the rest of the world and, at the same time, helped to promote and boost the country tourism industry, said Cheong Huat Seng, Secretary General of the Brunei Photographic Society. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
