By Malai FadleyRizal

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 54-year-old foreigner was fined $250 or two months' jail in default after he pleaded guilty to conveying six bags of undeclared White Glutinous Rice into the country before the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Customs Prosecuting Officer Hj Amran Hj Ibrahim related to the court that the defendant, Thing Ah Pioh, drove his car through the Immigration Checkpoint at the Sungai Tujoh Control Post.

Customs Preventive Officers stopped him for a routine inspection before he could leave for Miri, Sarawak on July 3.

Senior Magistrate Radin Safee Radin Mas Basiuni further heard from the prosecution that the six bags of White Glutinous Rice weighing 10 kilogrammes each were found concealed in the spare tyre compartment of the defendant's car.

Thing told investigators that he had bought the items from a retail shop in Limau Manis for an upcoming celebration for his son's birthday. The defendant admitted that he knew it was an offence to take the said goods out of the state without declaring them first. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
