His Majesty then received greetings
from subjects and residents of the Brunei-Muara district.
Some of the people were meeting their
leader in person for the first time which for them, a close encounter
with His Majesty was a unique honour.
Along the way, His Majesty stopped to
chat with several people.
His Majesty is said to be a people's
monarch and is very concerned and takes great interest in matters
affecting the lives of his subjects.
His Majesty has made frequent visits
to districts, mukims, kampongs and Government departments in order to
establish a close rapport with the people.
The Brunei-Muara District is the
smallest district in the country but is home to almost 69 percent of
the population. It has 17 mukims with a population of 213,000 people.
Also taking part in the event were
staff and officers from various banks.
This is the first time the banking
sector has been represented in the get-together ceremony.
While conventional banking has
existed in Brunei for decades, Islamic banking only came into practice
over 10 years ago.
His Majesty also stopped to view a
traditional "memukun" performance and mingled with some of the
musicians.
His Majesty then received greetings
from various associations and non-governmental organisations.
Among those taking part in the
ceremony for the first time were the Pakistani community.
According to one of the participants,
nearly 300 Pakistani families are living in Brunei with some of them
living here for more than 30 years.
Even bad weather did not dampen His
Majesty's enthusiasm to meet his subjects.
The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin College
Alumni Association put up an exhibition of photographs of His Majesty
and the Crown Prince.
The Association of Malaysian citizens
in Brunei also joined in the get-together ceremony.
Among the participants were from
Lawas, Sarawak wearing traditional costumes.
Members of school cadets, the Scouts
and Girl Guide associations as well as the Red Crescent also did not
miss the opportunity to meet their beloved monarch.
The involvement of the younger
generation in such associations help them to be disciplined, develop
good character and become responsible citizens of sound mind and body.
Also eager to meet their king were
students of various learning institutions.
Currently, there are over 150
government schools and fifty private schools, including three
international schools.
His Majesty places strong emphasis on
providing quality education in order to produce a highly skilled
workforce capable of spearheading the country's economic development.
His Majesty then attended a luncheon.
The Brunei-Muara District Officer,
Dato Awang Haji Adnan bin Hj Hanafiah, representing the rakyat,
residents and government servants in the district in his welcoming
speech said that the ceremony reflects the unity and willingness of
the people of the district towards upholding His Majesty's wise
leadership.
His Majesty then watched a stage
performance.
His Majesty also mingled with
performers at the end of the show, comprising of students from various
non-government schools and from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and
Sports.
The gathering has become a
traditional event, taking place every year to mark the celebration of
His Majesty's Birthday.
The get-together ceremony illustrates
the concern shown by His Majesty for his rakyat but equally evident is
the people's love for their ruler.
Wherever His Majesty goes, hundreds
will gather to meet and mingle with their ruler, as has happened
yesterday. --
