Education Ministry Launches
`Brunei Heritage' Book

Begawan - The launching of the Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB)
resource book, `Brunei Heritage', was held at the Civil Service
Institute yesterday afternoon.
The Curriculum Development
Department, Ministry of Education published the book.
Present as the guest of honour at the
launch was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Haji
Sheikh Adnan Sheikh Mohamad. In his welcoming remarks, Haji Sheikh
Adnan said that MIB was a compulsory subject that is the core of the
education system in the Sultanate.
The subject, who is taught in primary
and secondary schools as well as higher learning institutions, plays
an important role as it helps shape a responsible adult that practices
the Bruneian way of life.
MIB
also helps nurture moral values and loyalty to the ruler, religion,
race and country. Similar subjects are also taught in other countries
such as Singapore where it is known as National Education and in the
United Kingdom, where it is known as Citizenship Education.

Sheikh Adnan added that MIB is an effective subject to assist students
to be highly disciplined in every action. Therefore, MIB should be
fully appreciated by everyone. He urged all school authorities to pay
serious attention to eradicating social and discipline problems, which
can be done effectively with the assistance of parents and the
community at large.
To upgrade the education system, he
added that the Ministry would introduce various modifications and
heighten coordination to establish a Joint Education System that has
been implemented in various stages since 1994.
The Pioneering Joint Education System
was implemented in several primary schools earlier this year, and is
expected to be implemented in secondary schools by 2008.
After the launching of the book, the
guest of honour and representatives from various government secondary
schools were given several copies of `Brunei Heritage'. --
