As Brunei Achieves World Top Billing It Strives To Do Better

Bandar Seri Begawan – Brunei has attained a top spot in health by world standards and will continue to strive to do better when it launches the Convention on National Health Promotion 2004 this month.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) Brunei is currently among the 35 countries ranked as an A-Grade nation mainly in terms of mortality rate among children under five.

Those aged between 15 and 59 also fared well according to WHO’s latest listing.

As such Brunei is considered a developed country in terms of world health standards.

Among the 35 nations, only Japan, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Brunei are countries in the West Pacific area.

The Convention on National Health Promotion 2004 will be held on July 24 to August 1 this year.

The Convention contains three main components namely Seminar/Workshop, Health Expo and Sport.

The Convention hopes to encourage an attitude change encouraging the practice of healthy life, and to increase the involvement of the community in promoting health.

of health problems such as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, diabetes and obesity.

Currently one of the components of the Convention on National Health Promotion 2004 organised by the Ministry of Health this month is sports.

The Convention aims to increase awareness on everyone’s health and to emphasise this, a walkathon event was held yesterday at the Taman Sir Omar Ali Saiffudien in the capital yesterday.

It was organised jointly by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The event was open to all.

Prior to the walkathon, participants joined in for an aerobic exercise.

Also present was the Pehin Dato Awang Haji Yahya. Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister's Office and Awang Haji Jemat bin Ampal the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports.

The walkathon covered an area of around the capital with the men covering seven kilometres and the ladies five.

Meanwhile, the Chung Hwa Middle School Alumni also held a similar event yesterday.

The event which drew a large turnout aims to foster the relations and increase cooperation in all levels in the community.

It was launched by Pehin Awang Lau Ah Kok.

Prior to the event, Pehin Awang Lau Ah Kok said that an event such as this is universal and should not be determined by race or age.

He also said that the walkathon increases awareness and promotes health and well being of the public in line with the vision of the Government.

Many of those taking part in the walkathon also brought along their family members on the bright Sunday morning.
