By Azlan Othman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs called for a cleanup at the Prisons Department by urging officials and staff not to engage in immoral, law-breaking activities.

Included in the immoral activities cited are misuse of drugs, criminal acts and anything, which is against the country's rules and regulations and the Prisons Act and Regulation.

Dato Paduka Awg Hj Abd Rahman, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, stated this on behalf of the Deputy Minister.

Pehin Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Paduka Hj Awg Adanan's speech was read at the marching-off parade for recruits at the Prisons Department, who completed their eight-month course yesterday.

Pehin Dato Hj Adanan also called for officers and staffs of the Prisons Department to carry out their duties sincerely by obeying orders and maintaining discipline and following regulations.

Safety and welfare should also be taken into serious consideration to prevent undesirable activities, he said.

He also called on Prisons Officers to set a good example to the inmates. Enhancing the moral values coupled with mental, physical training and spiritual guidance are needed to shape quality personality, he said.

He also called on rehabilitation and training programmes pertaining to religious and spiritual aspects to be enhanced and fine-tuned so that the inmates would regret any misdeeds.

“Inmates should also be instilled with good faith and piety to be able to get back to the community to become productive and useful to society,” he said.

Parents should also readily accept the inmates once they are released from the Prison or Drug Rehab centre, the Deputy Minister said.

Assistance, support and concern by the society in assisting the rehabilitation process at the Prison and Drug Rehab centre are welcome to discourage them from committing the same offences

Dato Hj Abd Rahman later presented prizes to the best recruits in all fields which went to Mohamad Zaiddie bin Abdul Rahman for male recruit and Haswati bte Ash for female recruit.

Besides the presentation of prizes for the best recruits, a prize was also handed-over to the exemplary low rank officer for 2003/2004 session.

The male and female warder recruits have completed an eighth-month course starting November 3, 2003.

There were altogether 110 recruits, making it the biggest intake ever. During the training, they underwent training on Prisons' Acts and Regulations, Misuse of Drugs Act, Physchotrophic Substance Act, shooting, self-defence, physical exercise and religious knowledge. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
