Clean Up Prisons Of Immoral
Activities Says Deputy Minister

Begawan - The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs called for a
cleanup at the Prisons Department by urging officials and staff not to
engage in immoral, law-breaking activities.
Included in the immoral activities
cited are misuse of drugs, criminal acts and anything, which is
against the country's rules and regulations and the Prisons Act and
Regulation.

Affairs, stated this on behalf of the Deputy Minister.

Orang Kaya Johan Pahlawan Dato Paduka Hj Awg Adanan's speech was read
at the marching-off parade for recruits at the Prisons Department, who
completed their eight-month course yesterday.

Dato Hj Adanan also called for officers and staffs of the Prisons
Department to carry out their duties sincerely by obeying orders and
maintaining discipline and following regulations.
Safety and welfare should also be
taken into serious consideration to prevent undesirable activities, he
said.
He also called on Prisons Officers to
set a good example to the inmates. Enhancing the moral values coupled
with mental, physical training and spiritual guidance are needed to
shape quality personality, he said.
He also called on rehabilitation and
training programmes pertaining to religious and spiritual aspects to
be enhanced and fine-tuned so that the inmates would regret any
misdeeds.
“Inmates should also be instilled
with good faith and piety to be able to get back to the community to
become productive and useful to society,” he said.
Parents should also readily accept
the inmates once they are released from the Prison or Drug Rehab
centre, the Deputy Minister said.
Assistance, support and concern by
the society in assisting the rehabilitation process at the Prison and
Drug Rehab centre are welcome to discourage them from committing the
same offences

Hj Abd Rahman later presented prizes to the best recruits in all
fields which went to Mohamad Zaiddie bin Abdul Rahman for male recruit
and Haswati bte Ash for female recruit.
Besides the presentation of prizes
for the best recruits, a prize was also handed-over to the exemplary
low rank officer for 2003/2004 session.
The male and female warder recruits
have completed an eighth-month course starting November 3, 2003.
There were altogether 110 recruits,
making it the biggest intake ever. During the training, they underwent
training on Prisons' Acts and Regulations, Misuse of Drugs Act,
Physchotrophic Substance Act, shooting, self-defence, physical
exercise and religious knowledge. --
