Education Strategies For Special
Needs Individuals
By Lena M. Mahathor
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Some 90 Special Education Needs Assistants (SENA) and
homeroom teachers joined the `National Workshop on Effective Inclusion
Strategies for Educators of Individuals with Special Needs' that ended
yesterday afternoon.
The guest of honour, Dyg Apsah binti
Haji Abdul Majid, Director of Schools, said the Ministry of Education
upholds the philosophy that all children can learn and should he
helped to reach their full potential.
She touched on the importance of
educators having an understanding of the wide range of characteristics
of the students with special needs.
She hoped the participants will now
have a better insight on the programmes introduced during the
workshop, given the hands-on experience in drafting an effective
education plan for students with high support needs and the remedial
education plan for the students with learning difficulties.
Class teachers or subject teachers,
she said, should show commitment in providing teaching and learning
strategies to accommodate the whole range of students in the classroom
thus schools should also be aware of the diversity of educational
needs, for the flexibility in the curriculum so it can be adapted
where necessary.
She said “the quality of our
education system is evaluated by how responsive we are to the needs of
the individual student and quality here is synonymous with how
responsive we are as trained professional in responding to the needs
of all students”.
She believed that all educators,
including the workshop participants, could make a difference in the
life of all students.
The guest of honour presented
certificates to the workshop participants.
Dr Haji Kassim bin Haji Daud, Acting
Head of Special Education Unit, delivered the opening remarks.
The four-day workshop was jointly
organised by the Special Education Unit, Ministry of Education and the
Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO).
It is aimed to expose and update
participants with the latest strategies and techniques for educating
individuals with special needs. --
