Housewife Earns Over A Thousand More From Planting Maize

TemburongA housewife from Kampung Parit in the Temburong District has demonstrated that working hard as a part-time maize planter can be fun and profitable.

Dayang Awing Binti Angi, in her 40s, said she has been planting maize as her part-time job for the past 15 years.

A mother of three children, Dayang Awing is planting her maize bi-annually on a one acre land in Kampung Selangan.

According to Dayang Awing, she buys her maize seeds of the "super sweet" type and fertilizers from various sources, including the Agriculture Department and neighbouring countries.

However, Dayang Awing ploughs her land using a power tiller machine provided by the Agriculture Department.

Harvesting takes around two-and-a-half months.

Dayang Awing said her income from selling crops can reach up to $1,500 per harvest. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
