Awards Honorary Doctorate To Bruneian Poet

Begawan - A local poet Ustaz Awg Hj Abd Hamid bin Tamat, 62,
received an honorary doctorate in Malay Literature from the Philippine
Islamic University in Marawi City, Philippines for his long-term
involvement in poetry-writing last Friday at a leading hotel in
Manila, the Philippines.

Awg Hj Abd Hamid was also bestowed with the honorary Mindanao title of
Darjah Dato ` Paduka Utama Mindanao Diraja Yang Amat Berhormat Darjah
Satu.
He also received a Plaque of
Commendation and Appreciation in recognition of his outstanding
services to the Philippine Islamic University as well as his
monumental accomplishments as a successful Malay writer, poet and an
advocate of Malay solidarity and the advancement of Malay Literature
and studies.
The honorary doctorate and plaque
were presented by Dr Jiamil M Dianalan, the university's chairman
Board of Trustees, and assisted by Dr Hj Mohd Hassan Cana, the Dean of
Malay Islamic Studies, Mindanao State University. Hj Abdul Hamid,
better known as Salmi Mesra - his pen name - has three publications of
anthology of poems - Sentuhan Jiwa (Touching the Soul), Perjalanan Di
Wajah Bayang (The Journey on the Face of Shadows) and Garis-Garis
Hitam (Black Lines).
He had written more than 500 poems
after a 48-year involvement in poetry writing. --
