Knowledge Explosion Growing
Rapidly in Brunei
Kuala Belait –
Knowledge explosion in various fields including engineering and
technical is growing rapidly.
Dr Azahraini bin Haji Muhd Jamil,
Director of the Public Service Institute (PSI), said that the impact
from the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) development
will make knowledge and skills in general term obsolete.
The PSI director was speaking at the
opening of the Orientation Week for the new intake of students of the
Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College in Kuala Belait.
He said in dealing with the knowledge
explosion, new students who one day will become the future workforce
and teaching staff, need to always update and enhance their knowledge
in their respective specialisations in line with the concept of
'lifelong learning'.
In the latest intake, a total of 266
students have been accepted to undertake various courses and studies
offered by the college.
They were selected through 'point
system'. This system has just been introduced this year.
Students with high points were
qualified to take up courses at the institution.
The Jefri Bolkiah Engineering College
offers five courses at Pre-National Diploma and nine National Diploma
courses.
Following their orientation week, the
students will begin their study in July. Also, the college will no
longer offer the National Trade Certificate NTC-3 and NTC-2.
Instead, the courses will be catered
by the Sultan Bolkiah Vocational School in Seria.
Meanwhile, the Sultan Saiful Rijal
Technical College saw a 15 per cent increase in the number of
students, with some 505 new students of the 40th intake currently
attending an Orientation Week before they begin their studies at the
college.
Another 156 students will further
their studies at the national diploma level.
Awang
Haji Mohamad Daud bin Haji Mahmud, Director of Technical Education,
officiated the Orientation Week yesterday.
In his remarks, Awang Hj Mohd Daud
encouraged all new students to use the skills and knowledge they
gained from their studies to create and develop technology and
products that can be used in everyday life.
He added that these ventures will
enhance their skills, competitiveness and survival in the ever
challenging world.
A total of 30 courses have been
offered, with 13 National Diploma courses, 11 Pre-National Diploma
courses and the rest in National Trade Certificates (NTC).
The college received more than 2,000
applications. But, it can only accept 661 students overall.
According to an Education Officer for
the 40th intake, three courses namely Pre-National Diploma in Computer
Studies, Pre-National Diploma in Business and Finance and National
Diploma in Interior Design are well-received by the applicants.
This is because of the wider scope of
job market in those areas.
Also, it suited most applicants for
its qualification requirements.
