Hawkers Beware Your Days May Be Numbered

Bandar Seri Begawan – A blitz on hawkers and road side stalls have begun here.

A government spokesman said that conducting business activities without a license was an offence under Miscellaneous License Act carrying a fine of up to $10,000.

Meanwhile, erecting building structure on government land is also an offence under the same Act. An offender could be fined up to $2,000.

Enforcement Officers from the Brunei-Muara District Office and the Berakas Police Station on Tuesday night carried out a surprise operation on vendors along the road at Kampong Sungai Akar in Jalan Muara. The vendors were selling cooked food, fruits and vegetables.

During the operation, it was found that some of the stall owners failed to comply with certain rules including that of conducting business on government land without permit.

Members of the public are advised to conduct their businesses on suitable sites and in accordance to the law.

The night's operation was launched following complaints from the public on traffic safety and cleanliness of the environment.

Meanwhile, in a further step to prevent criminal activities the Jerudong Police and other law enforcement agencies last night conducted an operation called 'Ops Bedudun 03'.

The operation that lasted more than two hours began at around 10.35pm.

Seven law enforcement agencies namely the Royal Brunei Police, Immigration Department, Labour Department, Royal Customs and Excise Department, Narcotic Control Bureau, Syariah Affairs Department and the Land Transport Department took part in the operation.

During the operation, the officers conducted surprise inspections on workers living at the contractors quarters and those workers seen roaming in the area at night.

Ten foreign worker quarters were raided.

Five Indonesians, five Thaïs, two Bangladeshis and 15 Indians were brought to Sengkurong Police Station for further investigation when they failed to show their working documents. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
