Brunei Makes Move Towards Easier Regional Flights

Bandar Seri Begawan – Brunei, Singapore and Thailand are to sign a multilateral Agreement on Passenger Air Services in August this year which will enable freer flights between Asean countries.

The three countries currently held a two-day Senior Officials Preparatory Meeting to discuss and finalise the text of the agreement.

Pehin Dato Awang Haji Abdullah the Ministry of Communications Permanent Secretary chaired the meeting.

The Passenger Air Services Multilateral Agreement would have the flexibility of allowing designated airlines of the participating countries to provide passengers service in both directions. It will enable unlimited third and fourth freedom traffic rights on open-route schedule.

Brunei, Singapore and Thailand had earlier sealed the multilateral Agreement on The Full Liberalisations of All Cargo Air Services. That would allow designated airlines of participating countries to provide all cargo air services in either or both directions from points in the territory of the country granting the right via any intermediate point to point in another country and beyond.

Pengiran Haji Mohammad Yakub bin Pengiran Haji Othman, the Director of Transportation, Ministry Of Communications said that the Pact on Cargo Air Services Full Liberalisations has been signed among the three countries.

Upon linking the multilateral agreement, the three countries would establish a liberalised passenger and cargo air services.

It will use the '2+X' approach framework encouraging other ASEAN members to join in later. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
