More Malays Into Drug Abuse

Begawan - The number of locals who have been arrested for
drug-related offences has increased from 592 people in 2002 to 597
people in 2003. Malays make up the highest number of offenders.
According to the Narcotics Control
Bureau, 458 locals were arrested in 2001. This number increased to 592
the following year, and further increased to 597 in 2003. Sixty- three
permanent residents were arrested in 2003, while 34 foreigners were
arrested in 2002. This number increased to 40 the previous year, RTB
reported.
Malays made up the highest number of
arrests in drug-related offences. In 2001, 489 people of Malay descent
were arrested. In 2002, the number increased to 628, while 635 Malays
were arrested in 2003.
Those who were unemployed made up the
largest number of arrests. Last year, 451 unemployed were arrested,
while in 2002 a total of 435 arrests were made. The number of arrests
last year for those employed with the government was 92, while 74
people were arrested from the private sector and 56 individuals.
The total number of students arrested
for drug offences increased from 20 in 2002 to 28 the previous year.
Those who were 31 years old and above
made up the largest number in drug-related arrests. Last year, 227
people who were 31 and above were arrested. This was followed by those
aged between 21 and 25, and 26 to 30 years age group.
Last year, 619 men and 82 women were
arrested for drug-related offences.
Last year 701 people were arrested
over drugs compared to 713 in 2002.
The number of arrests in the first
five months of the year has also shown a decrease. In April 60 people
were arrested compared to 40 people in May. Fifty Malays were arrested
in April compared to 38 in May.
In the first five months of this
year, the NCB has seized a total of 280 grammes of marijuana. --
