Career Resource Center Opens At Yayasan
By Laila Rahman

Bandar Seri Begawan - "There is one aspect that I would like to emphasise which is the attitude and endurance of an employee. Every employee should have a positive attitude towards the jobs they have been offered. Financial rewards or salary should not be the utmost important values or criteria."

This was disclosed by Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pablawan Dato Paduka Hj Suyoi bin Hj Osman, Deputy Minister of Education, as the guest of honour at the launch ceremony of the Career Resource Centre held at the premises of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah in the capital.

He added that a graduate who starts working in the private sector might be given a lower salary compared to working with the government department.

"But the working experience that is gained is beneficial as not only to stabilize the post in the firm but also in the marketability aspect of the employee later," said the Deputy Minister.

Also present at the auspicious event were Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Hj Awg Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Hj Othman, Pehin Orang Kaya Putera Maharaja Dato Paduka Hj Abd Ghani bin Pehin Pekerma Dewa Dato Paduka Hj Abd Rahim and other distinguished guests.

"Actually, the working experience is one of the important components for every future employer," he added.

The highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the sponsors of the event and the launching of the Career Resource Centre, situated at Unit 1.29A by the guest of honour.

The guest of honour also signed on a plaque to commemorate the launching of the centre. He, along with other guests, was later invited to view a mini-exhibition held at the centre.

Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi explained that Form 5 or `N' level leavers are also considered to be the country's assets and that they should be provided with assistance and guidance as to urge them to do fruitful activities.

"They are the workforces in large number and as the initiator machine towards country economic development," he said. "Every one of them who is not working is considered to be a loss to the country because their efforts should have been channelled for economic activities towards the country's development."

According to the Deputy Minister, school leavers should be prepared to change their mindset about their work.

"There is no job that is bad as long as it is `Halal'. There are no jobs that should be seen as low because every job has its value. We should accept the fact that the job that we are doing is based on qualifications and specialists or our capabilities. Each of us has our own role in developing the country."

Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi hoped that the future employers, particularly those in the private sector, would make use of the centre by advertising the job vacancies available in their companies.

"Without the participation from the private sector, the objective of the centre will not be achieved."

He also advised the students that they could also receive counselling services from the centre based on types of courses that are appropriate, not only based on interest but also with regards to the trend required by the industries, firms or the government sector.

Welcoming remarks were made by Dyg Donnaliza bte Abdullah Puasa as the chairperson of the Career Resource Centre Committee. She explained that their current database comprises 600 jobseekers of varying levels of education.

They have so far been successful in getting jobs for 190 applicants, most of whom held `O' level, vocational and technical qualifications.

The centre functions as a "One Stop Centre" providing extensive information related to all stages in the career planning process. Currently, the centre houses material that covers topics on occupational and educational information, work search self-development as well as international work and learning opportunities.

A computer-assisted career search programme and Internet access to career-related sites are also available. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
