Overstaying Sends Thai And Bangladeshi To Jail

Bandar Seri Begawan - A Thai national who had unlawfully remained in the country for four years and nine months was sentenced to 3 months' imprisonment and 3 strokes of the cane by the Bandar Seri Begawan Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Bunserm Doengkhunthod pleaded guilty to having overstayed in the state since September 12, 1999 till he surrendered himself to the Immigration Department yesterday.

His employment pass had expired a day before.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate's Court yesterday also sentenced a 34-year-old Bangladeshi to three months' jail after he pleaded guilty to overstaying in Brunei Darussalam for one year and eight months.

According to the prosecution, the defendant, Farok Miah Tota Miah, decided to meet officers at the Immigration Department yesterday hoping that he could be repatriated home.

However, Immigration personnel arrested him when they found that he had been given a `Special Pass' before and the pass had since expired on October 17, 2002. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
