By Rol Ezam
Bandar Seri
Begawan – A 19-year-old local teenager who was driving
dangerously was sentenced to 2 years' imprisonment and a fine of $900
in default one month and 2 weeks' jail by the Bandar Seri Begawan
Magistrate's Court yesterday.
Earlier, he pleaded guilty to driving
dangerously by causing the death of his friend and to three other
charges under the Road Traffic Act.
The defendant, Khanul Zukria Alias,
who is unemployed, was also disqualified for life from holding a
driving licence.
He received a fine of $600 or a
month's jail for driving a car without holding a valid Brunei driving
licence, six months imprisonment for driving a car whilst under the
influence of alcohol, two years jail for driving in a manner which was
dangerous and which resulted in the death of his friend, Mazlan Juddin,
and a $300 fine or two weeks in jail for driving a car without the
consent of the car owner.
However, the presiding Magistrate
ordered for the imprisonment sentences to run concurrently. The
defendant was also given a one-month grace period to pay the fine.
The court heard that on August 30
last year, Khanul Zukria was driving his friend's car, a Nissan
Sunny bearing the registration number BR 6223, from Tutong Camp
heading towards Kampong Lamunin through Jalan Tanjong Maya-Layong-Lamunin
at a speed of about 90-95km/h. The deceased, Mazlan, was sitting at
the front passenger side.
When the defendant reached the
vicinity of Km 3, Jalan Layong/Lamunin, the defendant was talking with
the deceased while looking at him. The defendant did not realise that
the car he was driving had veered off the road. The car rammed into
the road safety railing on the left side of the road heading towards
Kampong Lamunin, said the Prosecuting Officer, Dk Hjh Hana Molina.
She said the defendant could not
avoid the car from crashing into the railing as he thought it was
going the right way. The car sustained serious damages.
According to the prosecutor, the
defendant's friend was confirmed dead by the doctor from Tutong
Hospital following the incident. The defendant's blood sample was
found to contain 105.56 mg of Ethanol. --
