Mukim Labi Fast Emerging As
Brunei’s Rice Bowl
Kuala Belait –
Mukim Labi is fast becoming Brunei’s rice bowl producing nearly
261,000 kilogrammes of paddy this year.
More than 100 farmers with a total
area of 550 hectares are developing the paddy field in Mukim Labi.
They are now planning to widen their paddy plantation project in the
future.
Awang
Haji Kamarhan, Penghulu of Mukim Labi, the Mukim Consultative Council
has registered more than 100 new applicants to take part in the padi
scheme project at Lot Sengkuang for the next season with a total area
of 700 hectares.
The main paddy area, which is being
communally developed, is situated at Lot Sengkuang.
The highest paddy production ever
recorded at Lot Sengkuang was nearly 100,000 kilogrammes.
There are two types of
commercially-potential paddy planted here. They are pusu and bario.
Awang
Haji Kamarhan said the production of padi is expected to increase from
time to time.
To mark the completion of the
harvesting season this year, the Mukim Labi Consultative Council held
a thanksgiving ceremony yesterday.
Awang
Haji Mohammad Yusof, Belait District Officer, attended the function.
In his speech, the Belait District
Officer urged residents of Mukim Labi to continue to work together and
respect one another in order to push for greater social and economic
development in the Mukim.
