SEAFDEC’s Fishery Research Vessel
Conducts Surveys In Brunei

Begawan – MV SEAFDEC 2, Southeast Asia’s fishery research and
training vessel, arrived at the fish landing complex in Serasa
yesterday.
The vessel will be in Brunei for four
days to conduct a joint research surveys with the Department of
Fisheries and perform trial fishing in Brunei waters.
These activities will be particularly
held in Zone 4 of the fishing areas of between 45 nautical miles up to
200 nautical miles from the coastline.
The ongoing activities in Brunei are
part of the vessel’s fishery resource surveys and training operations
in the waters of Southeast Asia Fishery Development Centre (SEAFDEC)
member countries which include Brunei.
The MV SEAFDEC 2 Marine vessel
SEAFDEC was completed in December 2003. It has the overall length of
32.5 meter.
It can accommodate 37 personnel,
including 15 crews, four scientists and 18 trainees.
The vessel is equipped with
sophisticated equipment such as the scientific echo sounder and
mapping sonar, fisheries research and environmental survey equipment
like Integrated Conductivity Temperature and Depth, ICTD system and
thermosalinograph.
The vessel’s surveys are intended to
strengthen the resource information for effective fisheries and
environmental management, train the department's personnel to carry
out the research work and to expose them to new fishing technology
suitable for this particular fishing area.
The new fishing techniques are aimed
to be transferred to the interested local fishing operators in the
near future.
Currently, the member countries of
SEAFDEC are Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, Malaysia,
Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. --
